内外合一,形神兼备
Internal and external combine into one, having both shape and spirit
The body is the container, the spirit the content.
Organs and essence, bones and marrow, fascias and vapours.
Gesture, expression in one's eyes, posture, footwork and performance are the shape.
Essence, spirit, vapours, force and skills are internal.
External prioritise the shape, internal the spirit.
External moves fast, internal reacts fast.
A strong body is strong muscles when external, strong organs when internal.
External focuses on the shape, internal on the face.
To train the spirit, one must first train the body.
